Overview

The office of the president at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) seeks an intern for the coming semester. Robert Doar, AEI president, is a former social-service administrator whose primary scholarly interest is poverty. He is an active and respected participant in the ongoing national debate about social spending and welfare reform.

Mr. Doar and his staff support the work of AEI’s scholars and promote the Institute’s fundamental values of limited government, economic opportunity, and American global leadership. The intern will work closely with the executive office staff to complete a broad range of important assignments that intersect with the work of AEI’s research teams and communications and outreach departments. Internship duties include researching topics in American politics, social policy, and poverty; summarizing and evaluating reports and scholarly publications; providing timely writing and editorial support; helping organize and staff public events; and assisting with various administrative tasks.

The ideal candidate will have an exceptional academic background in history, political science, American studies, or a related field; excellent writing and copyediting skills; experience in public policy research or political communications; and an appreciation for AEI’s mission and history.

The start dates for the summer program are May 27 and June 3. While the AEI Internship Program and all related programming will take place in-person in Washington, DC this summer, virtual interns may be accepted on a case by case basis. Please include your preferred start date and note your in-person/virtual preference in your cover letter.  Please note that a cover letter and writing sample are both required, in order for your application to be considered complete.
