The AEI Housing Center’s intern will support Edward J. Pinto and Tobias Peter’s research on domestic housing, historical and current mortgage lending policies, and financial policy reform.
Primary assignments will include assisting with maintaining the center’s various indexes and large databases; supporting research through data management, retrieval, and analysis; editing and contributing to scholarly papers, articles, and op-eds; creating and formatting charts and tables, graphic displays, and presentations; and performing other general Housing Center tasks.

Research will include open-source tracking and analysis of Salafi-jihadi activity and related political and security developments with a focus on Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Interns will assist in research for long-term projects and will work with other team members to produce analytical and data products for criticalthreats.org. Interns will also support the production of the weekly Salafi-Jihadi Movement Update.

The Agricultural Policy Studies Center at the American Enterprise Institute, directed by Vincent H. Smith, examines agriculture, trade, and rural policy through the lens of applied economics. We focus on the effects of policies in agricultural, maritime, and related sectors, especially policies authorized under the farm bill and implemented by the US Department of Agriculture. Past projects have dealt with the effects of crop insurance and other subsidy programs on farms’ production decisions and of artificial market power on US domestic and foreign shipping markets. Projects may also involve analyzing in-kind benefit programs and research and development initiatives.
This position requires an interest in economics, agriculture, or public policy. The skills required for this work include familiarity with Microsoft Excel, knowledge of intermediate econometrics and statistics, interest in high-quality research and technical writing, and a willingness to develop skills in Stata and R. The American Enterprise Institute’s Center on Opportunity and Social Mobility (COSM) seeks a driven, research-oriented data intern for summer 2024. The intern will work closely with COSM scholars Kevin Corinth and Scott Winship and COSM staff on quantitative, empirically driven, and policy-informing research that aims to improve opportunity and mobility for low-income Americans. American Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Mackenzie Eaglen specializes in defense strategy, defense budgets, military readiness, and the defense industrial base. Interns on the military strategy and US defense budget team will assist with compiling and preparing background on issues of congressional oversight, examining defense-budget investments across the services, drafting memos and report text, and collecting data. Assignments may also include attending congressional hearings on the defense budget and responding to current events relating to military-strategy issues.
Candidates should have experience in analytic techniques, Microsoft Excel, and quantitative or statistical fields. Candidates must demonstrate attention to detail and possess the ability to write and summarize information concisely, accurately, and creatively. The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) seeks an intern for its technology policy studies program, which focuses on advancing policies to encourage innovation, competition, and growth in technology and seeks to minimize unintended consequences amid the rise of disruptive technology, such as artificial intelligence. The intern will assist AEI’s technology policy team with the program’s daily research and administrative activities and the tech policy newsletter.
The intern is expected to:
- Provide research support for the technology policy team;
- Attend and staff AEI events, which regularly feature DC’s top policy leaders;

Interns with the American Enterprise Institute’s Video department are integral members of the production team. An intern in this department will gain experience in all phases of media production, from conceptual meetings and preproduction to studio shoots, postproduction editing, and motion-graphics creation.
The intern will have the chance to work on numerous video productions for the Institute’s YouTube channel. This is an excellent opportunity for the intern to create or expand his or her professional portfolio and gain hands-on experience in a professional production environment.

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) coalitions team helps AEI scholars connect their research with audiences inside and outside Washington, DC. We focus on getting scholarly work from the website to the community. Interns must have a startup mentality and an ability to identify new ways to add value across the organization. The most successful interns will be interested in and familiar with AEI scholars’ work, exhibit strong writing and organizational skills, and be curious about nonprofit management and public relations.
Duties will include facilitating conferences and events for AEI’s contacts in DC and across the country, writing weekly communications for core AEI constituencies, identifying opportunities to develop new partnerships with organizations around the United States, completing data entry in Salesforce, and assisting with other short- and long-term projects. The American Enterprise Institute’s science policy team seeks a driven, research-oriented intern. The intern will work closely with Senior Fellow M. Anthony Mills and science, energy, and environment staff to research the relationship between the federal government and the scientific research establishment, the role of expertise in governance, and the history and impact of federal research and development policy. Intern duties will include conducting literature reviews, retrieving and analyzing data, editing and drafting materials, discussing research ideas, organizing conferences and seminars, and providing background research for reports and scholarly publications.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent research abilities, strong writing and editing skills, attention to detail, an interest in science policy, strong interpersonal skills, and general curiosity. The Coalition Defense of Taiwan intern will conduct research in support of American Enterprise Institute scholar Dan Blumenthal and others. The portfolio focuses on US defense policy and security issues in the Indo-Pacific, including China’s military modernization, interests and objectives of US allies, and cross-Strait relations.
Key responsibilities may include:
- Monitoring political and military developments in the region,
- Researching historical and contemporary events,
- Supporting preparation for future tabletop exercises and wargames,
- Compiling sources in English and Chinese, and
- Collecting and organizing data.
